Rani Mukerji talks about Mardaani franchise
While talking to us, Rani Mukerji agreed that the films like Mardaani makes the audience uncomfortable, disturbed as she said, "It's high time that we accept the disturbance, we accept being uncomfortable because till we don't see these things, we aren't ever going to be aware of these things. Today is the time and age to be very much aware of these things and important to feel slightly uncomfortable because only then you will get to know what is going on. Because demons don't come giving an introduction, they just arrive from anywhere. It takes one wrong time and place to be in for something to happen. So its very important to go through that discomfort to be able to understand that yes there is some girl in some country in the world who is probably at a very difficult point in her life right now."
Rani speaks about the idea behind the franchise
Further into the conversation, she mentioned that the film franchise was born after Nirbhaya, the collective anger that was felt in the country at that time. She explained, "It was the collective anger, rage that was felt, the complete inhumanness of the incident. We were so shocked and it was probably the first time ever that we heard of something as brutal and inhuman and it shook us, we were all stunned and shocked."
"Adi (Aditya Chopra, producer), myself, Pradeep Da (filmmaker of the first one), it was the collective anger and somewhere we had to release this anger. As artists, as actors, the medium we have is through our films. And then Mardaani was born out of that anger."
She also added that the cast and crew has never seen Mardaani as a franchise but films that are made to make women empowered and addressed the question that is still unanswered, that is, "Why is always women who go through this?"
