Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi-starrer Haq was released on Netflix in the first week of January 2026, and since then, it has been getting a lot of love
from the audience and celebrities. Alia Bhatt has also watched Haq and confessed that she has become a ‘Yami Gautam fan’. Now, Suparn Varma has shared his reaction in a recent interview after Haq got a solid response from the masses post its OTT release. Suparn confessed that he has been getting many calls from people across the globe just to praise him for Haq. The director revealed that he knew the film would do well after its OTT release.
Suparn Varma on Haq getting love after OTT release
During an interaction with the Free Press Journal, Suparn Varma opened up about the public reactions after watching Haq on Netflix. The filmmaker was expecting that Haq would take a big jump after its OTT release.
Suparn Varma said, “I knew that once it reaches OTT, it's going to be the next big jump for Haq. But the response from the audience has been just... I mean, sometimes you expect a tsunami, but you don't realise how big a tsunami it's going to be! I’ve had people calling from Nigeria and Canada, and it’s trending as the number 1 movie across the Arab countries and all our neighbours, like Sri Lanka and Nepal, everywhere. Every single day I’m getting around 200 messages, calls and DMs, so it’s just been crazy. And this morning (Sunday), you wake up to Alia Bhatt having watched the film and loving it.”
The director also revealed how he deliberately made Yami Gautam’s character in Haq powerful to get connected with the audience. Suparn Varma explained, “In Haq, we deliberately made our character of Shazia Banu a Maulvi's daughter who may not have been very well educated, but she knew the Quran inside out – and that's what I think hit home most with every audience of every community. Because faith is important to everyone, and faith is a very personal thing. The minute you have a third person interpreting your faith for you, it starts getting coloured in that person's voice or tone, and then there is interpretation of room for misuse or mischief as well. And you've seen this across centuries.”
For the unversed, Haq is inspired by the landmark Supreme Court judgement. The film also stars newcomer Vartika Singh in a pivotal role. Haq was released in theatres on November 7, 2025.
