What is the story about?
Rani Mukerji, who's currently gearing up for her next big release, Mardaani 3 on January 30, got teay eyed while recalling how Karan Johar supporting her to
dub for her own lines for the filmmaker's directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998. Back then, Rani had just entered Bollywood with Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat (1996). So, when KJo instilled faith in her to keep her voice, which is often deemed husky, the actress felt confident as an artist. Rani was speaking at a special interaction with Karan to commemorate her 30 years in the acting business. The 47-year-old was barely 20 when KKHH released and cemented her career. The film still stands as a stepping stone in the filmography of even Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.

On January 22, Rani and Karan had a candid chat on stage as the two looked back at her three-decade long career. Karan started by sharing how, in the times when promos and trailers weren't seen as a crucial promotional material, he shot Rani with a blue screen introducing the film and the story of Rahul (SRK) and Anjali (Kajol) that went beyond friendship. "Rani's distinct voice plays a major part in your amazing performances," Karan said.

"Distributors told me to change the voice as the audience won't accept. I said Rani is new, how can the audience accept or not accept her? They don't even know her. She's still settling into films," he added.
Remembering how Karan was insistent to retain Rani's voice, the actress shared, "I owe this to Karan... He asked me 'are you dubbing for Ghulam?' I said yes. He asked 'do you have a problem with dubbing in your quintessential voice?' I said no. He asked 'did you dub for your first film?' I said yes. He said 'I love your voice and you're going to dub for my film.'"
Rani Mukerji gets emotional
Just holding on to her tears, an emotional Rani added, "Thanks to you Karan, I was able to retain my voice." Karan nodded, "You have such a beautiful voice, Rani!"
Rani Mulerji also spoke on playing strong roles in female-centric films like Hichki, No One Killed Jessica, Talaash, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway for she won the National Film Award for Best Actress.
