What is the story about?
A sequel to I Am Legend is officially in development, bringing the franchise back after nearly two decades. The post-apocalyptic zombie thriller, which
released its first original part in 2007, starred Will Smith. Fresh from his Oscar win for Sinners (2025), Michael B Jordan will reportedly be joining him. While I Am Legend was helmed by Francis Lawrence, the sequel won't see him returning, but would rather be made with a new director, Steven Caple Jr. Interestingly, the second installment will follow the alternate ending, not the theatrical one, and is based on a new creative direction that rethinks the original film's close.
Steven Caple Jr. takes up director's job
On April 20, Collider reported that director Steven Caple Jr. has been tasked with helming I Am Legend 2 for Warner Bros. Best known for directing Creed 2 and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Caple Jr. himself confirmed the development. On the sidelines of a media junket for Netflix's Man on Fire remake, Caple Jr. spoke about officially developing the movie's follow-up.
Michael B Jordan to join - Report
Michael B Jordan is still in talks to star in the film alongside Smith's return. The report further stated that Jordan is also involved as a producer with Smith, signaling a major creative role in shaping the sequel.
About I Am Legend
I Am Legend is loosely based on the 1954 novel penned by Richard Matheson. It followed the story of Dr. Robert Neville, played by Will Smith, a virologist and the apparent last human survivor in New York City after a man-made virus kills most of humanity, transforming the rest into flesh-eating mutants.
Alternate Ending
Caple Jr. claimed it is expected to be a direct sequel to the original film and will follow the alternate ending in which Dr. Robert Neville (played by Will Smith) survives his grenade blast rather than dying, as in the theatrical cut. The infected (Darkseekers) are shown to have intelligence and emotions. This changes everything for the sequel.
What to expect in I Am Legend 2?
While full details about I Am Legend 2 are under wraps, the sequel is expected to explore a post-apocalyptic world decades later, with human survivors rebuilding society. It could also possibly explore a more complex relationship between humans and the infected.
Will Smith has previously hinted that the story will be inspired by The Last of Us. That would involve more emotional storytelling, less "monster vs human," and more moral complexity.
