What is the story about?
Emraan Hashmi is back, and how! Awarapan 2, a sequel to his 2007 cult classic, is now in cinemas amid massive hype and fan anticipation. The movie is already
eyeing major box office milestones for the popular Bollywood star. Not just that, early reviews of the film have also been positive. However, amid its good response at the ticket windows, the film’s makers have been accused of plagiarism. A Reddit post alleging that the makers "copy-pasted" elements from the Homeland poster has gone viral online. It features a side-by-side comparison of the two posters, highlighting their uncanny similarities.
Emraan Hashmi's Awarapan 2 Post 'COPIED'?
Notably, both posters share several striking similarities. Emraan Hashmi and Claire Danes are seen standing amid crowds dressed in religious attire. While Homeland features women in burqas, Awarapan 2 shows monks. Netizens also pointed out the similarities in the colour palette.
Sharing the posters on Reddit, a user wrote, "I'm used to the lack of imagination in Bollywood, their eagerness to copy-paste from popular productions and slap it as "original" doesn't phase me at all. My question is: Are we lacking creativity? Did all the good artists choose Science? Do these people (who make these posters) not have any pride as artists?"
Internet REACTS
However, many defended the Awarapan 2 poster.
"That poster has been copied so many times, lmao. I instantly said, oh, another copy of Homeland poster," commented a person. Another wrote, "This is a very generic template to create visual interest for your focus, making it stand out across a saturated, contrasting background. It’s not something that groundbreaking to copy-paste and has been done for decades."
Meanwhile, when a user pointed out that Awarapan itself was a "copy," another argued that remakes and adaptations are no harm if they connect with the audience. They pointed out that cultural and linguistic differences can affect how stories are received, adding that many people enjoy Hera Pheri and Priyadarshan’s Bollywood comedies despite them being remakes. The user also said they had watched some of the original films but preferred the Hindi versions because they connected with them better. They concluded that audiences should be allowed to decide what they like or dislike.
