Rajinikanth’s iconic 1999 blockbuster Padayappa has once again put the spotlight on Superstar’s massive box-office appeal - 25 years after its original
release. The film which re-released in theatres on Rajinikanth’s 75th birthday, and to mark his 50th year in cinemas has opened to solid response across Indian and overseas markets.
Padayappa Re-release Box Office Report: Rajinikanth's Film Earns Rs 11 Crore
According to trade website Sacnilk, Padayappa grossed approximately Rs 4 crore worldwide on its opening day. Unlike several South Indian re-releases, which usually see collections drop sharply after day one, the film maintained steady growth over the weekend. It closed its opening weekend with around Rs 11 crore worldwide. Padayappa has grossed in the range of Rs 9.50-10 crores, including 8.25 crores in Tamil Nadu. This impressive numbers have made Padayappa the fifth highest-grossing re-release in India to date.

Baahubali: The Epic, remains the highest-grossing re-release with over Rs 72 crore. It is followed by Sanam Teri Kasam at around Rs 41 crore, Tumbbad with earned Rs 38 and 40 crore, and Vijay's Ghilli, which earned approximately Rs 26 crore during its re-release run.
Padayappa directed KS Ravikumar also starred Sivaji Ganesan, Soundarya, Radha Ravi, Nassar, Manivannan, and Abbas. Produced by Rajinikanth's Arunachala Cine Creations, the film still remains a favourite among Tamil film buffs for its strong storyline and screenplay, and for AR Rahman's soundtrack and songs. Recently, Rajinikanth, in a video shared his experience filming for Padayappa, shared that he is planning to make a sequel to the film from the point of view of Neelambari, who vows to avenge the 'injustice' she faced.
Inetrestingly, he also revealed that he initially had Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in mind for the role of Neelambari, which was eventually played by Ramya Krishnan. He also said the character was inspired by Nandhini from Kalki's Ponniyin Selvan, which was portrayed by Aishwarya Rai in the film adaptation.
