set to clash globally at the box office. Diwali 2026 will see one of the most fascinating global box office battles when on November 6, audiences around the world will have to choose between two vastly different cinematic spectacles - Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, based on India's most revered epic, and Takashi Yamazaki's latest Godzilla Minus Zero film, which marks the return of Japan's legendary giant monster. Furthermore, the simultaneous worldwide release sets up an unusual battle between mythology and monster mayhem, with both films also expected to compete for premium large-format screens, including IMAX.
Ramayana Releasing on Dhanteras 2026
The makers of Ramayana officially confirmed the November 6 release on Wednesday by unveiling the film's English trailer. Starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana, the ambitious mythological epic will arrive in cinemas on Dhanteras, kicking off the Diwali festive period with what is expected to be one of Indian cinema's biggest theatrical releases. What makes the date significant is that the release strategy allows the mythical epic an extended holiday corridor. Opening on a Friday which is Dhanteras 2026, Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana is expected to enjoy a strong opening weekend before benefitting from a slew of Indian festive holidays including Bhai Dooj andGovardhan Puja.
Godzilla Minus Zero Set For Diwali 2026
However, while the domestic market appears largely clear for Ramayana, the overseas box office presents a different challenge. Takashi Yamazaki's new Godzilla Minus Zero film is also releasing globally on November 6. The filmmaker's previous outing revitalised the iconic Japanese franchise, earning over USD 110 million worldwide on an estimated production budget of just USD 10 million. It was also the first non-English-language movie to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
Clash Of The Titans: Ramayana Vs Godzilla Minus Zero
The clash becomes even more intriguing because both films have been designed for premium theatrical experiences. The new Godzilla Minus Zero has already announced an IMAX release and is being marketed as the first Japanese production filmed specifically for the format. Industry reports suggest the film could enjoy a dedicated IMAX window lasting two to three weeks, similar to the rollout strategy adopted by Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.
This, in turn, could leave Ramayana competing for fewer IMAX screens. However, considering how Spider-Man: Brand New day crossed $1 billion globally despite having no IMAX screens, Ramayana too could see the same fervour – considering the demographic and target audience it is aiming at.
Whatever be the final outcome – whether audiences choose to pay obeisance to the onscreen Lord Ram or head to be terrified by the monstrous Kaiju, Diwali 2026 will deliver one of the biggest and most unique worldwide box office battles in recent years.
