At the press conference, The Gallerist actress mentioned that the Oscars shut out several good films that were directed by women from the nominations. According to her, only Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet got 8 nominations at the Oscars 2026, including best picture and best director.
Natalie feels that there were many best films this year which were made by women. According to the actress, people just see the barriers at the entry level because many people were not even recognised at awards time. Natalie Portman said that female directors don’t get the accolades they deserve at the award ceremonies. She mentioned films like Sorry Baby, Left-Handed Girl, Hedda and The Testament Of Ann Lee that could have been selected by the jury.

Natalie Portman also opened up about the burning topic of Renee Good’s tragic demise. For the unversed, the ICE officer fatally killed Renee Good. She openly blasted ICE brutality. During the interview, Portman stated that the brutality of ICC has to stop immediately. She called it a bittersweet moment for her as she is celebrating her film’s premiere at the festival while the nation is in pain.
