Mirzapur The Movie has secured an ‘A’ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), but not without undergoing several modifications.
The gangster drama, which is scheduled to arrive in theatres on September 4, has been cleared after the censor board recommended multiple audio and visual cuts. Interestingly, despite the film’s intense crime-based narrative, none of its violent or gory sequences have been removed. Mirzapur The Movie boasts a massive ensemble cast led by Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Jitendra Kumar, Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Dugal and Ravi Kishan. As per a report in Bollywood Hungama, on Saturday, August 29, it was reported that Mirzapur The Movie had received an ‘A’ certificate and that its runtime would exceed three hours. Details of the cuts have now emerged, revealing the changes made before the film received its final censor clearance. According to the censor certificate, the makers were asked to mute cuss words at four different places. At six other instances, abusive language was replaced with words deemed more appropriate. The dialogue “Galey se lag gar” was also modified following the CBFC’s directions. Several other dialogue-related changes were made across the film. In the first half, a particular word was replaced with ‘kamar’. Following the interval, the word ‘lanth’, which means idiot, was also modified. Additionally, a reference related to caste was changed as part of the censoring process. The CBFC also sought changes to intimate content. The makers were instructed to reduce intimate scenes by 50 per cent through suitable alterations in both visuals and sound. These changes were implemented in two sequences—one appearing in the first half and another in the post-interval portion. As a result, approximately 35 seconds of intimate content was removed from the film. What stands out is that the CBFC did not demand cuts to any of the film’s violent or gory scenes. This is particularly notable considering the Mirzapur franchise is known for its gritty portrayal of crime, violence and gang warfare. Following the implementation of all the requested modifications, the film was granted its censor certificate. As per the certificate, Mirzapur The Movie has a final runtime of 197.19 minutes, translating to 3 hours, 17 minutes and 19 seconds. The certificate further reveals that the film was cleared by the Revising Committee (RC) of the CBFC. Typically, films are first examined by the Examining Committee. If filmmakers disagree with extensive modifications suggested at that stage, they can approach the Revising Committee, which subsequently reviews the project and takes the final decision regarding certification and required changes. Directed as a cinematic continuation of the popular franchise, the cast also includes Mohitt Malik, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Harshita Shekhar Gaur, Shweta Tripathi, Sonal S Chauhan, Anangsha Biswas, Shaji Choudhary and Sushant Singh. Mirzapur The Movie is set to release in cinemas on September 4.
