What is the story about?
For over thirteen years and across two films, Mohanlal’s Georgekutty managed to stay one step ahead of everyone the police, Varun Prabhakar’s family, and every threat
that came his way. But Drishyam 3 finally asks the question the earlier films avoided along with new twists and turns which has left audience startled. What happens when Georgekutty can no longer escape the consequences of his actions?
Drishyam 1 and Drishyam 2: The Story So Far
The first Drishyam, released in 2013, introduced Georgekutty as a cable TV operator living a simple life in rural Kerala with his family. Their lives change forever when his elder daughter Anju accidentally kills Varun Prabhakar, the son of Geetha Prabhakar, Inspector General of Police, in self-defense after her classmate attempts to assault her. After knowing the truth, Georgekutty gets determined to save his family, he carefully covers up the crime. He creates scenarios, moves the body, destroys evidence, disposes Varun’s car, and eventually hides the remains beneath a newly built police station, believing nobody would ever suspect the location.
Drishyam 2, released in 2021 on OTT, reopened the case after a new witness emerged. The police once again closed in on Georgekutty’s family and even recovered skeletal remains from beneath the police station. However, the climax revealed that Georgekutty had anticipated this situation years earlier and thought of plan B. While the family manages to avoid punishment once again, the truth continues to haunt everyone involved. Varun’s parents still seek justice, the town remains suspicious, and Georgekutty himself struggles to live with the burden of what happened.
What Happens In Drishyam 3? (Spoilers Ahead)
Set several years after the second film, Drishyam 3 shows Georgekutty and his family back to their routine lives. Georgekutty is now a theatre owner and film producer. Ironically, he produces a film inspired by his own past, and becomes a blockbuster. Although his family appears to have moved on, Georgekutty is mentally exhausted and paranoid. He fears that the truth may finally come out. At the same time, Varun’s parents, Geetha and Prabhakar, are grieving and determined to destroy Georgekutty’s family.
The film also marks the return of the antagonist Constable Sahadevan, played by Kalabhavan Shajohn. Now suspended from service and holding a grudge against Georgekutty's family, Sahadevan secretly works with Prabhakar to target their family again.
Does Georgekutty Surrender?
In the climax, Prabhakar creates a plan to frame Anju in another crime, hoping she and her family will finally pay for their sins in Varun’s death. Georgekutty eventually discovers that his daughter is going to get framed in a case, and manages to outsmart them once again by manipulating the crime scene and protecting his daughter. He changes form from a protective father to a mastermind who even harms her to stay safe. This is the new version of Georgekutty, who is emotionally broken and tired of living in fear.
Realising the endless cycle of revenge will never stop, he agrees to surrender for Varun’s death but in her own terms which is in exchange for his family’s safety. Before surrendering, he warns Prabhakar that evidence against him still exists as he has recorded Sahadevan's confession on his phone and harming the family further would make George kill him.
Is Varun Prabhakar Alive?
No. The film confirms that Varun Prabhakar is dead. However, his presence continues to haunt both families emotionally. The grief of Geetha and Prabhakar remains key to the story, while Georgekutty’s family continues suffering from the psychological burden of hiding the truth. Their discussion inside the hospital serves a proof to this.
Is Drishyam 4 Announced?
Although director Jeethu Joseph previously suggested that Drishyam 3 could conclude the story, the ending strongly hints at another sequel. In the final moments, Prabhakar asks Geetha whether she finally feels satisfied after Georgekutty’s arrest. But Geetha says she still wants Anju to face punishment for killing her son. The scene clearly hints that that the revenge saga is far from over.
The ending leaves one major question unanswered — can Georgekutty continue protecting his family from inside prison? Did he actually get convicted? What did he show as evidence? The answers will probably be revealed in Drishyam part 4.
