What is the story about?
Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar The Revenge took over the box office earlier this year. Emerging as the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2026 across India and overseas,
the espionage thriller raised the bar for future spy genre movies. Amid high expectations, the first part of the franchise released in Japan on July 10. Despite the film’s initial global success and critical acclaim, it failed to draw the Japanese audience to theatres. Shockingly, Dhurandhar had an underwhelming start in Japanese theatres. The film’s craze eventually fell flat in Japan and could not replicate the response it received in India, Europe, America and other parts of the world.
Dhurandhar's Japan release falls short of expectations
According to reports, Dhurandhar released across nearly 80 screens in Japan on July 10. Certain trade portals revealed that the film did not enter Japan's top 25 films on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Additionally, on its first day of release, the espionage thriller recorded 449 admissions by 2 PM across 57 locations. The collection saw negligible growth in the second half of the day. The total number of admissions increased to only 900 across 80 locations.
Hindi films at Japan box office
The biggest Indian film at the Japanese box office is SS Rajamouli’s RRR, starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR. It opened with 8,230 footfalls. Prabhas and Shraddha Kapoor’s Saaho stands next with 6,510 footfalls. Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD saw 3,700 footfalls, whereas Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone’s Pathaan opened with 2,220 footfalls. Salaar (2,200), Jawan (1,960), Rangasthalam (1,610), Devara (1,550), Baahubali 2 (1,380), and Tiger 3 (1,300) also saw tremendous responses at the Japan box office. Before Dhurandhar, Pushpa 2 missed the mark and couldn’t be a part of the top ten list.
