A devastating cloudburst triggered powerful flash floods in the Himalayan village of Dharali, located in the Uttarkashi region of Uttarakhand, on Tuesday.
The sudden deluge tore through homes, trees, and vehicles, trapping 60 to 70 people and claiming several lives. Bollywood actress Sara Ali Khan, who often visits the state on spiritual trips, expressed concern over the tragedy and prayed for the well-being of the people of the hill state. Praying for safety, strength and healing for all." She shared the Uttarkashi District Emergency Operation Centre's helpline numbers in a follow-up post. Uttarakhand Cloudburst Dharali, known as a key stopover en route to the Ganga's origin, is dotted with hotels, restaurants, and homestays. It saw nearly half of its area buried under a fast-moving mix of slush, rubble, and water. Multi-storey buildings collapsed like dominoes as the torrent swept through the village. Officials believe the cloudburst occurred in the Kheer Ganga river’s catchment area, prompting urgent rescue operations in the ecologically sensitive region. Indian Army's Additional Directorate General of Public Information tweeted, "A landslide struck near Dharali village, approximately 4 km from the Indian Army Camp at Harshil, at around 1:45 PM today. Responding with urgency, the #IndianArmy swiftly mobilised 150 personnel, who reached the site within 10 minutes and immediately launched rescue operations. So far, more than 20 civilians have been safely evacuated. The injured are receiving timely and effective medical attention at the Indian Army's medical facility in Harshil." Search and rescue operations are still ongoing, say reports.
