As India celebrates its 80th Independence Day in 2026, the occasion offers a chance to look back at the many ways the country's freedom shaped popular
culture. Cinema, in particular, became an important reflection of a newly independent nation's hopes, anxieties and aspirations. But do you know which was the first Indian film to arrive after Independence? The answer, however, comes with an interesting distinction. Shehnai, starring Kishore Kumar, Naseem Banu and Indumati, was released on August 15, 1947, the very day India became independent. It is widely described as the first Hindi film released in independent India. Directed by PL Santoshi, Shehnai was a musical comedy and arrived in theatres at a historic moment. While celebrations were taking place across the country to mark the end of British rule, audiences could also watch a Hindi film on the big screen. Its release date consequently gave it a unique place in Indian cinematic history. As per Box Office India Shehnai was the fifth-highest grosser of 1947, trailing behind Jugnu, Do Bhai, Dard and Mirza Sahibaan. However, Shehnai was not a film that was conceived and produced after Independence. Like several movies released around that period, its production would have begun during the final years of British India. So, if the question is specifically about a film made after India became independent, the answer becomes less straightforward. Among the notable films of this period was Shaheed, released in 1948. Directed by Ramesh Saigal and starring Dilip Kumar and Kamini Kaushal, the film revisited India's freedom struggle through the story of a young nationalist. It was screened for the Congress Party's All India Committee in April 1948 before its commercial release in Bombay later that year. Another landmark was Aag, Raj Kapoor's 1948 directorial debut. The film marked Kapoor's first production under his R.K. banner and began a filmmaking journey that would make him one of Indian cinema's most influential figures. The years immediately following Independence therefore became a defining period for Indian cinema.
