Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially passed the $700 million mark, putting the Tom Holland-led Marvel film in an exclusive club of highest-grossing
movies in domestic box-office history. The Sony and Marvel superhero film has earned about $704.5 million in North America and a whopping $1.8 billion globally in just two weekends of release. Soon after its July 30 release, the latest MCU offering became one of the biggest theatrical hits of the year. Starring Tom Holland in the titular role, the movie also brings back Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned. The movie also features Jon Bernthal as Punisher and Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, alongside Sadie Sink making her Marvel debut as Jean Grey.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day joins $700 million club
Crossing $700 million domestically is not a common achievement. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now become the seventh film to cross the mark in North America. Also in the elite group are blockbusters Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($963 million), Avengers: Endgame ($858 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($814 million), Avatar ($785 million), Top Gun: Maverick ($721 million) and Black Panther ($700 million).
The speed with which Brand New Day has reached the milestone makes it all the more impressive, setting a record for the fastest movie to hit $700 million domestically.
International showings push film toward $2 billion
Internationally, the film has done equally well. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has grossed approximately $1.108 billion overseas, narrowly surpassing the international collection of $1.106 billion for Spider-Man: No Way Home. With North America, it has grossed around $1.8 billion worldwide, making it the year's highest-grossing film so far.
Infact, its performance has also placed it among the 10 biggest international releases of all time.
Record-breaking beginning
The film opened to an extraordinary box-office run. Brand New Day made around $355 million domestically and about $932 million globally when it debuted. It went on to pass the $1 billion mark worldwide in just six days, showing the huge global demand for Holland's return as the web-slinger.
Naturally, the current course of the film has prompted questions as to whether it could eventually challenge the $2 billion mark. Only a small number of films have crossed $2 billion at the worldwide box office, including Avatar, Avengers: Endgame and Titanic. Avatar is now at about $2.9 billion worldwide after re-releases, and Avengers: Endgame is at about $2.7 billion.
Will Brand New Day create box office history?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has a chance to keep its impressive streak going, thanks to solid audience interest and relatively little competition through the end of summer. Some box-office predictions have even said the movie could be the first film to reach $1 billion domestically. A more ambitious $3 billion worldwide finish is on the table, but the film's early performance has put it firmly in the conversation.
