The Recording Academy is making a major move for the 2027 Grammy Awards by adding Best Asian Pop Music Performance, the first-ever Grammy category devoted
to Asian pop music. The new award will honour outstanding accomplishments across genres such as K-pop, J-pop, C-pop and other Asian pop styles that show meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. The category is one of five new additions announced as part of broader updates to the Grammy Awards. The Academy says the award is designed to celebrate artistic excellence in Asian pop music and recognise the genre’s increasing global influence. The decision has, however, triggered an unexpected debate on social media, mainly pertaining to K-pop kings, BTS. Regarding the Best Asian Pop Music Performance, the Recording Academy said, "This category recognises artistic excellence in Asian pop music performances originating from or widely recognised within Asian markets, including but not limited to K-pop, J-pop and C-pop, with meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. Awards are presented to the performing artist(s)."
Why are new categories important for Asian pop?
For years, artists from Asia have been competing in the general Grammy categories, without a designated field of their own. This new category will honour recordings that are either specifically from, or widely recognised in, Asian music markets, and that must include a substantial use of Asian languages. Only songs performed entirely in English will be excluded.
The decision has been compared to the Recording Academy's past move to create categories like Best African Music Performance, which was introduced to better recognise music from rapidly growing music markets around the world.
BTS fans call it milestone move
The announcement instantly sparked a fierce debate among music fans, especially BTS ARMY. Many netizens argued that the category reflected BTS' impact on expanding Korean music's global reach over the past decade.
BTS, which became the first K-pop act to receive major Grammy nominations, has often been at the centre of discussions about Asian representation at Western award shows. The group has yet to win a Grammy, but many fans believe the creation of an Asian pop category signals the industry is finally recognising the size and impact of Asian-language pop music.
On X (formerly Twitter), many users said the category was long overdue for recognition for artists who have spent years breaking down language barriers and building global audiences. Some speculate that BTS could be one of the strongest contenders if they release Korean-language music within the eligibility period.
Some netizens believe it is isolation
But the reactions also remain mixed. Some users even argue whether a separate category for Asians promoted inclusion, or if it actually isolate Asian artists from major general-field awards. Some contended that artists like BTS, who have already proved their mettle on the global stage, should stay in the same category as the mainstream pop acts and not be designated a separate one.
There was also much discussion about eligibility rules. Only songs sung in English do not qualify, as the category requires meaningful use of an Asian language. This has caused fans to speculate on which artists and releases might be lined up to win the first award.
The first-ever Best Asian Pop Music Performance award will be awarded at the 2027 Grammy Awards on February 7, 2027.
