What is the story about?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has hit another milestone in its amazing box office run, topping the 2026 worldwide box office after only a week of release.
The newest Marvel-Sony blockbuster has brought in over $1.155 billion internationally in its first seven days, surpassing Disney-Pixar's Toy Story 5, which had been the top film internationally this year with some $1.067 billion until now. Tom Holland's superhero adventure continues to break records, making Spider-Man one of the most bankable characters in cinema and the MCU. The movie also stars Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Mark Ruffalo and Jon Bernthal.
On top for entire week
According to Variety, the latest figures show Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossing $449 million in North America and $706.3 million overseas.
It continues its reign at the domestic box office, smashing a number of records during its opening week. The movie became the second-fastest film in history to reach the billion-dollar mark, crossing it in just six days. Only Marvel's Avengers: Endgame managed it quicker, making $1 billion in just three days in 2019.
More box office records broken
Not only is Brand New Day the biggest film of the year, but it has also broken numerous industry records. It has grossed around $42 million and set a record for the biggest Tuesday gross in North American box office history, beating the previous record set by Spider-Man: No Way Home.
It also had the biggest ever Monday collection, grossing $47 million, beating the long-standing record held by Black Panther, apart from becoming the fastest domestic release to reach $400 million during its theatrical run, hitting the milestone in just four days.
It set the record for the biggest domestic opening of all time with about $360 million in its opening weekend, and its $932 million global opening was one of the largest worldwide launches in the history of cinema.
Tom Holland's Spider-Man keeps on swinging
The remarkable success of Tom Holland as Peter Parker is another big feather in the cap for one of the MCU's biggest crowd-pullers. Holland has played the character since his debut in 2016, appearing in four standalone Spider-Man films and multiple Avengers films. Brand New Day keeps that up, showing that audiences still care a lot about his take on the iconic superhero.
Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman even joked about the film's huge success, stating that the results indicate reports of declining interest in theatrical movies might have been premature. "So I guess movies aren’t dead after all?" Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures, quipped on the Sunday of opening weekend.
Kevin Feige explains why Spider-Man is still a hit
"The film is a success because Spider-Man is such a popular character and Tom's performance as Peter Parker," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said
"Spider-Man is one of the most beloved characters in popular culture, and that’s not going to change, although the audience’s preferences might change over time," Feige added. He thinks the franchise has a winning formula with Holland's portrayal that is still relatable to moviegoers around the world.
According to Variety, he opined earlier this week, "People can write about changing tastes, but as characters that grow and evolve through the decades, there are none better than the Marvel characters — and none better than Peter Parker. When you find an actor like Tom Holland to bring that character to life, it is the magic formula."
With no slowing down, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to continue its dominant theatrical run, thanks to strong word-of-mouth from audiences and little direct competition in the immediate future. The movie also set up major events ahead of Marvel's two upcoming tentpoles - Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.
