Tom Holland's Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the latest worldwide box-office phenomenon, crossing the $1 billion mark in just six days after its release.
The Marvel blockbuster did it in the second-fastest time in cinematic history, behind only Avengers: Endgame (2019), breaking a slew of domestic and global box office records along the way. The movie brings back Tom Holland's web-slinger Peter Parker along with Zendaya and Jacob Batalon. The movie also stars Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo and Sadie Sink in her MCU debut. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Brand New Day sets up many events ahead of the big release of Marvel tentpole Avengers: Doomsday in December 2026. Sony Pictures announced on August 4 that the newest Spider-Man adventure has now brought in around $1.05 billion globally, with $407 million of that sum coming from North America and $645.8 million from international markets, according to the studio's numbers.
Second-fastest film to hit $1 billion
Brand New Day is the second fastest to reach the billion-dollar milestone, behind Avengers: Endgame, which raked in $1.2 billion on its opening weekend in 2019. It's been a phenomenal opening week for the Sony and Marvel Studios production, as the fourth iteration in the franchise consistently shattered industry expectations since its release.
The film opened to a record-breaking $932 million worldwide and then added enough business in the following weekdays to comfortably cross the billion-dollar mark before completing its first full week in theatres.
Spider-Man continues to break records
Brand New Day has become one of the biggest theatrical events in Hollywood history. Its major accomplishments include becoming the largest domestic opening weekend ever ($360 million), topping Avengers: Endgame. The movie also garnered the biggest Thursday preview gross in North American box office history with $72 million. From being the biggest single-day opening gross of $169.8 million to being the fastest movie to hit $400 million domestically, the momentum is steady. Infact it has even ended up as the movie with the highest-grossing Monday in history, collecting $47 million, surpassing Black Panther's previous record.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now the biggest launch ever for Sony Pictures. "I did not expect Endgame's [domestic] record to be beat, but I couldn't be happier that it was beat this past weekend by our 38th MCU movie," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Variety. He stressed that the movie's performance was an emotional milestone for the studio. "It's overwhelming, frankly, to find ourselves in this position on a Monday morning - in the very best way."
According to Kevin Feige, the blockbuster performance is a good sign for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially with Avengers: Doomsday coming later this year.
Good start to Marvel's next phase
Marvel Studios couldn't have timed the huge success of Brand New Day better. The film is expected to lead straight into Avengers: Doomsday, which brings back several Marvel heroes and introduces Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. The resurgence of audience enthusiasm for MCU films has led to Brand New Day being widely viewed as an essential confidence booster for Marvel's Multiverse Saga going into its next crossover event.
Is $2 billion next benchmark?
Reports claim the film still has plenty of life at the box office. It has had an A CinemaScore, a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and audiences have embraced it, repeat viewing has been strong, all of which have helped maintain extraordinary momentum. And with relatively few blockbusters coming out for the next few weeks, many now expect Spider-Man: Brand New Day to easily cross $2 billion worldwide, a milestone that only a handful of films have reached in the history of cinema. If it keeps on its present trajectory, it could turn into one of the biggest blockbusters in the history of film.
Record-breaking year for Hollywood
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the fourth billion-dollar film of 2026 so far. The other three are The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael, and Toy Story 5. Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is closing in on the same milestone quickly.
