What is the story about?
Indian 3 has officially been confirmed, bringing Kamal Haasan and director Shankar back for another chapter in the vigilante franchise. The announcement
comes despite the poor box-office performance of Indian 2, which was made on a large budget and failed to recover its reported production costs. The third film was already teased at the end of the 2024 sequel, with the story set to explore Senapathy’s father, Veerasekaran Balram, also played by Kamal Haasan. Several members of the Indian 2 cast, crew members are returning, including the music composer Anirudh Ravichander. Here’s what we know about Indian 3.
Indian 3 - Cast And Story
Kamal Haasan will play both Senapathy and his father Veerasekaran Balram, with the third instalment expected to explore the latter’s life as a freedom fighter. Siddharth, Kajal Aggarwal, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Bobby Simha and SJ Suryah are also confirmed to return from Indian 2. Kajal Aggarwal’s role is also expected to have screen time in the third part. The previous film introduced her character in connection with Senapathy’s past, offering only a glimpse. Rishikanth is another name that has got interest among viewers. The actor, who appeared in Indian 2 and Coolie in supporting roles, has recently gained more attention following his work in Dorothy and Modha Rathiri.
The film’s technical team includes composer Anirudh Ravichander, cinematographer Ravi Varman and production designer Muthuraj. Subaskaran and GKM Tamil Kumaran are producing the film under the Lyca Productions banner.
Indian 2’s Costly Box-Office Run
The franchise began with the 1996 film Indian, in which Kamal Haasan played Senapathy, a former freedom fighter and varma kalai expert who takes the law into his own hands while fighting corruption. Indian 2, released in 2024, brought Senapathy back decades later as he continued his fight against corruption. The sequel ended on a cliffhanger, while its post-credit sequence introduced the backstory of Senapathy’s father, Veerasekaran Balram.
The confirmation of Indian 3 comes despite the commercial problems faced by Indian 2. The project was initially conceived as a single film with a reported budget of around Rs 235 crore. Production delays and rising costs eventually changed its scope, with the story being divided into two parts. The combined production cost reportedly crossed Rs 500 crore. The sequel was expected to perform well because of the reunion of Kamal Haasan and Shankar, but its theatrical run fell short of expectations.
Indian 2 reportedly earned around Rs 150.94 crore worldwide, while its India collection was around Rs 83 crore.
