Asha Bhosle’s death at 92 put an end to an iconic era in the history of Indian film music. On Sunday, April 12, she took her last breath at Mumbai’s Breach
Candy Hospital, and her family was by her side in the final moments. Belonging to the celebrated and prestigious Mangeshkar (Abhisheki) family, she was Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti’s third child after the late Lata Mangeshkar and Meena Khadikar. Asha left behind a bereaved extended family. The Mangeshkar family has many renowned film personalities besides Lata and Asha. Shraddha Kapoor is also a relative.

Shraddha is the granddaughter of Pandharinath Kolhapure, who was the first cousin of Asha Bhosle. Kolhapure’s daughters are Shivangi, Padmini and Tejaswini. Shivangi married actor Shakti Kapoor. They have two children, son Siddhanth and daughter Shraddha. Padmini, a Bollywood star, worked with her ‘aatya’ (paternal aunt) in the 2013 Hindi family drama film Mai. The Kolhapures and Mangeshkars would reunite annually for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

Asha got married at an early age. Her first husband was Ganpatrao Bhosle. She eloped with him at the age of 16; he was 31. They got married against her family’s wish. He was working as her personal secretary. After two children and in the middle of her third pregnancy, Asha left him and went back to her maternal home. Asha and Ganpatrao had three children- Hemant, Varsha and Anand.
Hemant, the eldest child, was a pilot and then a music director. He died of cancer in 2015 at the age of 66. Varsha, a columnist, died by suicide on October 8, 2012. Anand, a film director, worked as his mother’s manager. His son, Chaitanya, is a member of Band of Boys. He is known as Chintu. Anand’s daughterZanai is a singer and aspiring actress.
Asha Bhosle last wish
The 92-year-old had expressed her last wish in Amrita Rao and RJ Anmol’s podcast, Couple of Things. She said in Hindi, “Meri khud ki iccha aisi hai ki gaate gaate hi main chali jau. Yehi meri iccha hai. Abhi mujhe seekhne ka kuch nahi hai. Gaana meri life hai. Bachpan se gaya hai. 3 saal se classical, Baba ka sikhaya. Puri life usmein chali gayi hai. Film line mein 82 years ho gaye hai. Abhi jake yeh iccha hai ki gaate gaate mera dam nikle. Mujhe sabse zyada khushi hogi ki main gaate gaati jau.”
(Translation: My only wish is to die singing. That’s my last wish. I don’t have anything left to learn. Singing is my life. I have been doing that since the age of 3 with my father. I spent my entire life doing that. It’s been 82 years in the film industry. Now, all I want is to die singing. I will be the happiest if I keep singing through my last days.)
Asha Bhosle funeral
Bhosle’s mortal remains reached her residence, Casa Grande, in Lower Parel, some time ago. Family members and other close friends and relatives will be paying their last respects to the singer from 11 AM to 3 PM tomorrow (Monday, April 13) before heading to Shivaji Park for the funeral. The details were confirmed by her son, Anand.
