What is the story about?
The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond has finally been released in theatres after the Kerala High Court lifted the stay on its release on Friday (February 27).
The makers have high expectations from the sequel of The Kerala Story, but it looks like the audience has not been responding to the film, especially in Kerala. According to the latest reports, several shows of The Kerala Story 2 have been cancelled due to low opening occupancy in the southern state. Notably, the advance booking on the second day has also remained limited. It looks like the people from Kerala have clearly refused to watch the film due to its alleged narrative against the state and its culture.
The Kerala Story 2 struggles in Kerala
A report published in India Today suggests that several screenings didn’t take place at some theatres in Kerala. On the first night, some theatres in Kochi, Thrissur and Kozhikode had to cancel the shows due to lack of an audience. The report also states that afternoon shows in Lulu Mall, Travancore, Aries and Greenfield Cinemas saw the sale of around 25 tickets and 5 tickets, respectively. The theatre management has decided that they would run the show if bookings reach at least 10 tickets.
Well, it is indeed an unexpected start for The Kerala Story 2. For the unversed, a petition was filed against the film’s censor certificate in the Kerala High Court, claiming that the film is allegedly portraying Kerala and its people in a bad light and promoting harmful stereotypes. The court had put a stay on the film's release for 15 days, but the makers immediately filed a petition to reconsider the decision on the same.
The next day, Justice Thomas lifted the stay and allowed the makers to release The Kerala Story 2 in theatres.
What did producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah say?
After the court lifted a stay on The Kerala Story 2 release, the producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah issued his statement. He stated that Kerala is a beautiful and ‘God-loving’ place. He confessed that they have not portrayed Kerala and its people negatively in the film.
Shah told ANI, “Some criminals live in Kerala, some are from Madhya Pradesh, and some are from Rajasthan, and that's why we named this film The Kerala Story 2 Goes Beyond.”
