What is the story about?
The countdown to Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 has begun! Written and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the sequel to the 2023 film has been releasing a new look
of its cast and the characters they are playing on social media. On September 18, Suraj Venjaramoodu was introduced as Dileep, followed by SJ Suryah as Bodhi a day later. Today (September 20), Sun Pictures unveiled Vidya Balan's look as Kantha in the action film. Superstar Rajinikanth, Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik are all returning to reprise their roles in the Tamil film releasing on October 15, 2026.
Vidya Balan is Kantha in Rajinikanth's Jailer 2
Taking to social media, Sun Pictures shared the first glimpse of Vidya Balan and wrote, "Introducing Vidya Balan as Kantha from the world of #Jailer2." The actress makes her official Tamil debut in the Jailer sequel; earlier she had a cameo in the Ajith film Nerkonda Paarvai (2019), which was a remake of the Hindi film Pink (2016). Earlier this year, she played Khadija Sultana in Riteish Deshmukh's Marathi film Raja Shivaji.
The 25-second teaser shows Vidya with a short bob and a blue saree and black blouse, walking into a large room while smoking a cigarette. As Kantha, the actress tells the camera, "After you come here, you cannot leave here without listening to us." Her character seems to be a no-nonsense individual that will not hesitate to call you out. Each character, from Suraj Venjaramoodu to SJ Suryah and now Vidya Balan, has their own background music composed by Anirudh Ravichander for the sequel.

The eagerly awaited sequel features new cast additions of SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Anna Rajan and Jatin Sarna. Meanwhile, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Hrithik Roshan and Vijay Sethupathi reportedly have cameos in the Rajinikanth film. The veteran actor will return as retired jailer "Tiger" Muthuvel Pandian for a follow-up story that sees several cast members from the 2023 film return. The original, which released on August 10, 2023, became the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023.
Produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures, Anirudh Ravichander is also back as the composer for the Tamil film. Filmmaker Nelson brings back many crew members from his first film, as Vijay Kartik Kannan, R Nirmal and DRK Kiran are also returning as cinematographer, editor and art director, respectively. Meanwhile, Chethan D'Souza joined the sequel as the action choreographer.
