What is the story about?
Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia’s mythological thriller, The Vvaan, has released in theatres this Friday. Based on the popular folklore of the Van
Devi temple in Bihta, Bihar, the film explores the conflict between ancient traditions and modernisation. Set against the backdrop of Chhath Puja, the movie is directed by Deepak Kumar Mishra. What is The Vvaan's story?
The Vvaan is set in Devanchal. Earlier, the region was known for its prosperity. Dev Van brought joy and good luck. However, the prosperous Dev Van was a forbidden forest after sunset. According to the local myth, Van Devi’s powers cannot be seen by any human. The rule is broken by King Vikramaditya, who is forced to enter the forest to seek the deity’s blessings for his critically ill pregnant wife. Though he enters Dev Van with a blindfold, the King accidentally uncovers his eyes to see the Goddess. It is rumoured that he was killed that night.
The story shifts to the present time in Mumbai, where Rishi Kumar (Sidharth Malhotra), a builder, rescues a young Gangajal vendor from being crushed under a malfunctioning construction vehicle. He is an atheist. While he wants to utilise his holidays for a Goa trip, a land acquisition matter he is forced to return to his village in Devanchal. Mamta (Tamannaah Bhatia) is a staunch devotee of Mata Rani and hopes that she blesses them with a child.
Faith vs development
Rishi and Mamta reach Devanchal with their friend Ved Prakash, or VP (Maniesh Paul). Rishi’s elder brother (Anup Soni) is against the idea of constructing a road that connects the village to the main city via Dev Van. He and other villagers fear the wrath of Van Devi. Certain incidents add to their fear and their belief that the Goddess is ‘angry’.

Rishi refuses to believe in the myth and wants the village to develop. There is a reason behind this. Six years ago, Mamta was pregnant with their baby. Back then, he was a devotee of Van Devi. Despite bad weather conditions, an eight-month-pregnant Mamta, along with Rishi, visits the temple. His sister-in-law, Sushila (Shweta Tiwari), is adamant about visiting the temple without caring about the weather. When they reach the temple, a rock rolls down, injuring Mamta. Due to a delay in reaching the hospital, they lose their child. Rishi and his sister-in-law's relationship turns bitter, and he moves to Mumbai for a better lifestyle.
Who is the antagonist?
Standing for development in Devanchal, Rishi trusts Deepak (Sunil Grover), a politician and the descendant of King Vikramaditya. Deepak has sinister plans behind destroying Dev Van. Rishi learns about his smuggling business after his nephew enters the forest at night and doesn’t return. Rishi and VP go to Dev Van to find him. Since the nephew had a camera, they learn about the smuggling activities.
The nephew is in a critical condition in a hospital. Rishi informs Deepak about the crime that’s happening inside the forest. He destroys the memory card, but something is not right.
Sunil Grover's backstory
Deepak, who is the descendant of King Vikramaditya, can enter the forest without fear. However, to understand this power, the backstory must be understood. When King Vikramaditya opened his eyes to see Van Devi and her powers, a tiger pounced on him. But it did not attack him. Van Devi spoke to him and explained how Bhutakke, creatures that are neither humans nor demons, took over the Dev Van. To protect Devanchal’s people from their terror, she trapped them within the forest. During the day, they are harmless. Since King Vikramaditya visited the temple for a genuine reason, she granted him the power to enter Dev Van anytime without fearing Bhutakke. An anklet was handed over to him, and that was passed down to every generation after the king.
Deepak kills his father to access the anklet. He enters the forest with the intention of destroying the forest. Bhutakke interact with him and propose. They want him to free them, and instead, they would make him their chief. Deepak agrees. He removes the anklet and lets them enter his body. They walk out of the forest.
Sidharth Malhotra's battle against evil
Deepak’s powers double. Rishi learns that the demons don’t attack him. He takes the risk of entering Dev Van at night. Before he dives into the unknown, Mamta urges him to participate in Chhath Puja. She accidentally slips and drowns into the water. Rishi rescues her with Devi’s guidance. He realises the power of faith. Once in the forest, Rishi makes it to the temple. The Goddess comes alive and reveals his past, that can allow him to fight the evil.
Sidharth Malhotra's double role in The Vvaan
His ancestor, Veer, was a warrior. Since Devanchal was in trouble and feared the Bhutakke, he wanted to relocate her idol to Dev Van. However, it was not an easy task. His faith and devotion impressed her, and she agreed to bless Devanchal. After establishing the idol, she trapped the demons and freed the region from their terror. In return, he blessed Veer and said that if Devanchal is in trouble, he has to reincarnate and protect the locals. Rishi is Veer’s reincarnation.
The Vvaan ending
The Vvaan ends with Rishi killing Deepak in front of Van Devi. He lights a lamp in the temple with Mamta. One year later, the couple is blessed with a baby.
