Bharathiraja, known for with redefining Tamil cinema through his realistic storytelling set in rural regions, passed away in Chennai at the age of 84 due
to age-related health complications. His death on June 10 has caused sorrow across the film industry and political circles. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay announced that the director’s last rites would be conducted with full state honours, in recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema. The TVK chief also paid his respects by visiting the veteran filmmaker’s residence on ECR, located close to his own home.
CM Joseph Vijay Announces State Honours For Bharathiraja
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay expressed deep sorrow over Bharathiraja’s passing and confirmed that the filmmaker’s last rites would be conducted with full state honours. In his message on X, he described Bharathiraja as a director who brought the essence of rural life to the screen and created a unique cinematic identity rooted in Tamil culture. He mentioned the filmmaker’s numerous national and state awards, including the Padma Shri, and acknowledged his influence on generations of artists. Vijay extended condolences to Bharathiraja’s family, friends, and fans, mentioning that his contribution to Tamil cinema is irreplaceable.
Apart from this, he also visited Bharathiraja’s residence. CM Vijay was seen emotional as he paid his last respects to the late filmmaker. Before leaving, he also consoled actress Radikaa Sarathkumar, who shared a close mentor-protégé bond with Bharathiraja. Radikaa began her acting journey under his direction in Kizhakke Pogum Rail, that shaped her career.
In 2025, Vijay paid his respects to Bharathiraja’s son Manoj following his passing. Several videos and pictures of Vijay outside Manoj’s residence were shared on social media. In one clip posted on X (formerly Twitter), Vijay was seen placing a big garland on Manoj’s mortal remains and standing in silence looking upset. After spending some time paying tribute, he then quietly left the house.
The Legacy of Iyakkunar Imayam
Bharathiraja, fondly known as Iyakkunar Imayam, made his directorial debut with 16 Vayathinile in 1977 and went on to direct over 40 films across a career spanning more than four decades. His acclaimed works include Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Sigappu Rojakkal, Alaigal Oivathillai, Kaadhal Oviyam, and Mudhal Mariyathai.
His final directorial film came through Paravai Kootil Vaazhum Maangal, part of the anthology Modern Love Chennai. Apart from directing, he also had a brief acting career, with recent appearances in films like Maharaja and Thudarum. His unreleased film Pulavar is expected to be his final on-screen performance.
