impossible stunts in the third installment of the blockbuster franchise. The next chapter in the Top Gun series was announced by Paramount Pictures during its CinemaCon 2026 presentation in Las Vegas. The studio revealed that a script starring Cruise was already underway. This confirms that the movie has progressed from just being an idea. It is now in active development. Cruise is expected to remain the central figure of the story yet again.
Top Gun 3 is finally happening
The big reveal was made on April 16. Top Gun 3 will also have Tom Cruise's flying genius, heading to the skies once again. A direct sequel to director Joseph Kosinski's 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, the third part was revealed to be in the works in 2024. While fans waited for more updates, the latest piece of official confirmation from Paramount has left everyone thrilled. Also, the fact that the 63-year-old actor will be back to headline the third film in the action drama series is an added perk. More confirmation on other returning cast members is awaited.
Top Gun 3 in the making since 2024
While Jerry Bruckheimer will turn producer again, whether or not director Joseph Kosinski will also be back is yet to be announced. is yet to sign on. Bruckheimer said in 2024, "We pitched Tom a story he liked. But he's a very in-demand actor, and he's got a lot of movies lined up, so we have to wait and see."
Speaking about Top Gun 3, Tom Cruise expressed in 2025, "We're thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible. It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick. So, all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick."

Top Gun (1986) was directed by Joe Kosinski and starred Miles Teller and Glen Powell. Its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick (2022) came 36 years later and was helmed by Joseph Kosinski. The second part emerged as a massive hit at the box office, grossing $1.5 billion globally. Such was the theatrical mayhem that legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg credited Tom Cruise with saving the theatrical business post Covid-19.
Top Gun 3 for Paramount
A third film has reportedly been Paramount's major production ever since its merger with Skydance in 2025. David Ellison even called the project important. Paramount will also acquire Warner Bros under a deal worth $111 billion, with Top Gun 3 coming under the new, larger company.
