Controversy Surrounding Janhvi Kapoor's Peddi Character
While the film has been widely appreciated for its sports-drama narrative and Ram Charan's performance, it has also attracted criticism from a section of viewers over the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor's character. Several social media users accused the film of hypersexualising the female lead. The controversy quickly became one of the most talked-about aspects of the film, at times overshadowing its sporting storyline and commercial success.
As criticism kept increasing, director Buchi Babu Sana addressed the issue publicly on June 6. "I believe cinema should entertain, inspire and connect with the audience and not make them feel uncomfortable or disrespected," the filmmaker said. He clarified that the characters and scenes were never intended to demean or objectify women. However, he acknowledged audience concerns and expressed regret if any part of the film caused discomfort.
Responding to the backlash, the filmmakers announced that certain portions of the film would be amended.
Buchi Babu Sana stated that cinema evolves alongside audiences and that storytellers must remain sensitive to changing social attitudes and expectations. The director agreed that every woman deserves to be portrayed with dignity and respect, adding that the team remains committed to creating stories that celebrate strong and meaningful female characters.
Peddi follows the journey of its titular protagonist, played by Ram Charan, as he discovers his identity through sports. The character explores multiple disciplines, including cricket, wrestling and sprinting, before eventually earning recognition from the Indian government. It also stars Shivarajkumar, Divyendu Sharma, Jagapathi Babu and Boman Irani.
