A R Rahman is in the eye of the storm caused by his statement that the Hindi film industry’s prejudice could be because of communal bias. Many came out
in his support and some criticised him for making baseless allegations against Bollywood and getting fewer opportunities in the North. Recently, Kangana Ranaut revealed Rahman turned down the offer to compose music for her political drama, Emergency (2025). Known for his choc-a-block schedule due to live concerts, South industry commitments and even making movies. While he is on the list of almost every Indian filmmaker, Rahman has prioritised projects that convince him creatively. Along with Emergency, the veteran music director has rejected many projects. As the debate around communalism in the Hindi film industry continues, let’s take a look at the four movies across languages that were rejected by the Grammy recipient. From Emergency to Ek Tha Tiger, Rahman couldn’t be associated with these projects for various reasons.
Emergency
Amid the ongoing controversy over Hindi filmmakers refusing to work with Rahman, probably due to communal bias, Kangana Ranaut nullified his claim and revealed he refused to meet her for the narration. She said on Instagram, “I desperately wanted to narrate my directorial Emergency to you, forget narration, you even refused to meet me. I was told you don't want to be a part of a propaganda film. Ironically, Emergency was called a masterpiece by all critics, even opposition party leaders sent me fan letters appreciating the film for its balanced and compassionate approach, but you are blinded by your hate.”
Ek Tha Tiger
According to reports, A R Rahman was the first choice to compose music for Ek Tha Tiger. However, at the last minute, the music director backed out of the film, leaving Salman Khan angry. Sajid-Wajid came on board as guest composers.
Jawan
In his previous interviews, Atlee said he wouldn’t make films without A R Rahman composing the music. However, with Jawan, the filmmaker had to sign the contract with Anirudh Ravichander and he did not disappoint. Atlee had reportedly approached Rahman for the action thriller, which he refused.
Dasavathaaram
In the late 2000s, A R Rahman prioritised other Hindi films such as Jodhaa Akbar over Kamal Haasan’s Dasavathaaram, a Tamil movie. In a statement, the music director said, “I didn't have the time for Dasavathaaram, their schedule didn't match mine.”
Following the controversy, Rahman issued a video, clarifying his statement. The veteran composer said he never wished to cause pain. He further added that India allows him to create a space where he can express himself.
