What is the story about?
Tom Holland-led Spider-Man: Brand New Day is reportedly returning to the big screen with extra footage, giving fans a reason to check out Tom Holland's
latest Marvel adventure. Sony is planning the re-release, though the studio has not yet announced a release date or exactly what the new scenes will entail. Fans have been speculating that the bonus content could be Rosario Dawson's Claire Temple, a character whose appearance was shot but cut from the theatrical release. According to Variety, the development comes as the superhero blockbuster continues its remarkable box office run and nears another major domestic milestone on the sidelines of Marvel's other re-release, Avengers: Endgame, writing history again.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day re-release with new footage
Released on July 31, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has proven to be one of the biggest theatrical successes this year. The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, has grossed around $950.7 million domestically and around $2.495 billion worldwide, reports said.
The movie has also made history in the domestic market. On September 16, it overtook Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which held the domestic box-office record for over a decade with some $936 million. Brand New Day broke that record with $936.773 million in just 47 days.
With its domestic total approaching the $1 billion mark, a re-release could give the film another theatrical push. The added footage may also bring people back to the cinemas that have already seen the movie.
Rosario Dawson's Claire Temple may return
Rosario Dawson's Claire Temple has been reported to be among the additions to the re-release. The character, a nurse who provides medical assistance to vigilantes, has appeared in a number of Marvel television projects including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders as a key supporting character.
Dawson has previously admitted she filmed a scene for Brand New Day that didn't make it into the final theatrical cut. The re-release has been rumoured to include footage audiences may finally get to see. But Claire Temple may not be the only shocker. Reports say there are plans for more content from Sony and Marvel, but no concrete details have emerged.
Box office success powers re-release
The re-release comes on the heels of Marvel and Disney's recent showcase of the ongoing theatrical potential of established superhero movies with the re-release of Avengers: Endgame. With new footage, the re-release, Avengers Endgame: Encore, took in more box-office dollars worldwide.
Sony has previously re-released its Spider-Man movies in theatres to extend their runs. Spider-Man: No Way Home returned to theatres over the 2022 Labour Day weekend and took in an additional $9.3 million domestically. A similar approach could work for Brand New Day, especially if Sony can book premium large-format screens during a slow stretch at the box office.
Spider-Man's chase rolls on
The re-release could also give Brand New Day one more chance to close the gap with Avengers: Endgame on the worldwide box-office chart. The film is now sitting at about $2.495 billion worldwide, with Endgame still in the lead with an estimated $2.885 billion lifetime gross. Brand New Day is already Sony's top-grossing movie ever, topping Spider-Man: No Way Home, which ended its worldwide run at around $1.92 billion.
The film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker, along with Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, Tramell Tillman and Florence Pugh. The story is about Peter trying to put his life back together after a spell makes his friends and family forget who he is.
The film is reportedly running two hours and 25 minutes now. Sony has yet to confirm when this added-footage re-release will hit theatres.
