The younger sister of another icon – the late Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle was known for carving out a niche for herself in an industry, which at the time of her initiation in Bollywood still preferred the demure, coy Indian woman to westernised individuals. Starting off with B-grade films, Asha Bhosle would go on to voice some of the most iconic songs in the industry – including legendary compositions Dum Maaro Dum, Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko, and even Ye Mera Dil.
From cabaret numbers to romantic songs, soulful ghazals and even peppy foot tapping songs, Asha Bhosle refused to be boxed into any one genre. Her indelible mark on the music industry is unparalleled. Modern day singers can opt for experimentation because Asha Bhosle paved the way for them.
