What is the story about?
Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal and directed by Laxman Utekar, might be getting a sequel. According to a latest report, Vicky and Laxman are in talks for
a follow-up project. This time, the story is expected to shift focus to Shahu Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. In Chhaava, Vicky essayed the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. While nothing has been officially confirmed, it is being said that the project is already in its planning stages and that both the actor and director are keen on moving forward with the idea.
Is Chhaava 2 On The Cards?
According to ETimes, the proposed sequel will be based on the life of Shahu Maharaj and is expected to go into production next year or by early 2028. Vicky Kaushal is said to be interested in the collaboration, though no formal announcement has been made yet.
There is, however, a timeline to consider. Laxman Utekar is currently occupied with his next project, Eetha, which stars Shraddha Kapoor. He is expected to begin work on the Chhaava follow-up only after completing that film. On his end, Vicky is presently working on Love & War, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.
Reports also suggest that Vicky will subsequently take up Mahavatar, directed by Stree and Stree 2 director Amar Kaushik. Given these prior commitments on both sides, Chhaava 2 remains a future possibility rather than an immediate production.
Historically, Shahu Maharaj, born Shivaji II, had a remarkable life of his own. He was captured by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb as a child following the execution of his father, Sambhaji Maharaj, and spent nearly two decades in Mughal captivity before being released. He later went on to re-establish Maratha authority, making his story one of resilience and political significance.
Chhaava Crossed Rs 600 Crore At The Box Office
The commercial success of Chhaava is a key reason why a follow-up is being considered at all. The film, which released on February 14, 2025, chronicled the life of Sambhaji, the second ruler of the Maratha Empire, and went on to earn between Rs 797 crore and Rs 809 crore worldwide.
The film featured Vicky Kaushal in the lead role of Sambhaji Maharaj, while Akshaye Khanna played Aurangzeb. Rashmika Mandanna was seen as as Yesubai Bhonsale. Chhaava was produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, marking the banner's first entry into the historical epic genre.
