What is the story about?
Thalapathy Vijay's much-awaited Jana Nayagan has been hit by one crisis after another even before it has released. First, the full HD print of the unreleased
film was leaked online on April 9. Now, in an even more alarming development, a local cable TV channel in Coimbatore broadcast the leaked film on air for the public to watch. The incident has sent shockwaves through the Tamil film industry and among Vijay's massive fanbase. Police acted quickly and made arrests, but the damage to the film's prospects has already been done.
Jana Nayagan Aired Illegally
The film was illegally broadcast on April 11 on a private local television channel named Raasi Prime Movie, which operates in areas including Somanur and Karumathampatti in Coimbatore district.
The footage was telecast for 21 minutes at night, after which TVK supporters approached the police around 11 PM and eventually filed a complaint. The complaint was filed by Mohanapriya, deputy secretary of the Coimbatore East unit of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
Following the complaint, Coimbatore Superintendent of Police K Karthikeyan formed two special teams to investigate the case. The probe confirmed that the film, which is yet to receive certification, had been illegally accessed and broadcast to viewers.
Authorities seized equipment allegedly used in the illegal telecast, including a computer, five hard disks, and other electronic devices. The office of the cable channel has been sealed. The accused, 44-year-old S Palanisamy, was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
Jana Nayagan Leaked
The TV broadcast came days after the film was leaked in its entirety online. The Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing arrested six individuals in connection with the illegal leak of the film, which is reportedly made on a staggering budget of Rs 500 crore.
The production house KVN Productions lodged a formal complaint naming 21 individuals allegedly involved in the piracy operation, saying the leak had caused 'massive financial losses' and could severely impact the film's commercial prospects.
The leak was met with widespread condemnation from the film community, including iconic actors Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, and Chiranjeevi, who all spoke out against piracy in the industry.
Why Is Jana Nayagan Not Releasing?
Jana Nayagan has been stuck in a months-long censorship battle. The CBFC first asked the makers to cut 27 scenes. The producers agreed but the certificate was still withheld. The makers approached the Madras High Court and even the Supreme Court, but got no immediate relief. The film missed its January 2026 Pongal release. A committee screening was cancelled in March due to a member falling ill. With Tamil Nadu elections underway, the film's release has been pushed once again.
Jana Nayagan is widely touted as Vijay's last film before he fully transitions into his political career. It was originally planned for release during the Pongal festival in January 2026 but has been delayed ever since. The film, directed by H Vinoth, also features Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Menon, and Prakash Raj.
