The agreement reportedly followed a special screening of an edited 30-minute footage, which impressed the studio with its scale and visual effects. The two-part film is among the most anticipated releases in Indian cinema.

Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Ramayana has reportedly found its Indian distribution partner. According to Variety India, Karan Johar's Dharma Productions has acquired the domestic distribution rights for the ambitious mythological epic produced by Namit Malhotra. The report states that Malhotra showcased an edited 30-minute cut of the film to multiple studios as part of the distribution process. The footage, said to feature the film's large-scale visuals and VFX, reportedly impressed Dharma Productions and led to negotiations.
As per the publication, discussions initially began at around ₹500 crore before the deal was eventually finalised at ₹250 crore. With Dharma Productions now handling the Indian theatrical distribution, the studio is expected to mount a massive nationwide release for the film.

Earlier, it was announced that Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute Ramayana in international markets, while Dharma Productions will reportedly oversee its release across India. The collaboration gives the film strong distribution support in both domestic and overseas territories ahead of its theatrical debut.
About Ramayana
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana will be released as a two-part cinematic saga. Ranbir Kapoor stars as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi plays Goddess Sita, while Yash essays the role of Ravana. The cast also includes Ravie Dubey as Lakshman and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman. The ensemble further features Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha, Arun Govil as King Dashrath, Indira Krishnan as Queen Kaushalya, Sheeba Chadha as Manthara, Adinath Kothare as Bharat and Kunal Kapoor as Lord Indra, among others.
Backed by Namit Malhotra, the film's music has been composed by Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer along with AR Rahman. The first installment of Ramayana is slated for a Diwali release.
The first installment is slated to hit theatres on November 8, 2026, coinciding with the Diwali festive season, while the second part is scheduled for a Diwali 2027 release.
