What's Happening?
Mona Fastvold has directed a short film for Patek Philippe's new 'I AM. I WEAR.' campaign. This campaign was launched in conjunction with the release of the Gondolo Ladies First collection. Fastvold collaborated with Brady Corbet on the film. The Gondolo Ladies First collection features
three references with diamond-set dials—Refs. 7043G-001, 7043R-001, and 7043GR-001—designed for everyday wear. The collection draws inspiration from the original Gondolo line, which dates back to the Art Deco era and was initially created for the Brazilian market. Patek Philippe's President Thierry Stern expressed a desire to offer women an easy-to-wear jewelry watch, leading to this new collection and its accompanying campaign. The brand's history includes the debut of its first in-house, hand-wound chronograph movement in a women's watch, the Ladies First Chronograph Ref. 7071, in 2009.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant for the luxury watch market, particularly in the U.S., as it represents a strategic effort by Patek Philippe to enhance its appeal to female consumers. By launching a dedicated 'I AM. I WEAR.' campaign with a short film directed by Mona Fastvold, the brand aims to connect with a broader audience and reinforce its position in the women's luxury watch segment. The focus on 'easy-to-wear jewelry watches' like the Gondolo Ladies First collection indicates a response to evolving consumer preferences, where functionality and daily wearability are increasingly valued alongside traditional luxury. This move could influence other high-end watch manufacturers to similarly invest in targeted marketing campaigns and product lines for women, potentially leading to increased competition and innovation in this niche. The involvement of a notable director like Fastvold also adds an artistic and cultural dimension to the campaign, potentially attracting consumers who appreciate the intersection of luxury and creative expression.
What's Next?
The launch of the 'I AM. I WEAR.' campaign and the Gondolo Ladies First collection is expected to be followed by continued marketing efforts to promote these new offerings. Patek Philippe will likely monitor sales performance and consumer reception to gauge the success of this strategy. Other luxury watch brands may observe Patek Philippe's approach to women's marketing and potentially adapt their own strategies in response. Future collections from Patek Philippe could further expand on the 'easy-to-wear' and 'jewelry watch' concepts, potentially introducing new designs or complications tailored for female wearers. The collaboration with filmmakers like Mona Fastvold might also set a precedent for future artistic partnerships in the luxury sector, as brands seek innovative ways to tell their stories and engage with consumers beyond traditional advertising.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate commercial implications, this campaign reflects a broader cultural shift in the luxury industry towards more inclusive and empowering messaging. The 'I AM. I WEAR.' slogan suggests an emphasis on personal identity and self-expression, moving beyond mere product display to a narrative that resonates with the wearer's individuality. This approach can foster a deeper emotional connection between the brand and its customers, particularly women who are increasingly seeking products that align with their values and lifestyles. The historical context of the Gondolo line, dating back to the Art Deco era, also highlights the enduring appeal of classic designs while adapting them for contemporary tastes. This blend of heritage and modernity, coupled with a focus on female empowerment, could set a new standard for how luxury brands engage with their diverse clientele in the U.S. and globally.
