What's Happening?
Scent Beauty is making a significant investment of $5 million in marketing through the end of the year to launch Stetson Untamed, a new fragrance collection aimed at Gen Z men. This collection, which includes three eaux de parfum and three body sprays,
is designed to appeal to a younger demographic for the Stetson brand, which has been around for over four decades. The 75-ml. eaux de parfum are priced at $38, body sprays at $11, and gift sets at $30. Starting September 1, the collection will be available in over 5,000 retail locations nationwide, including Walmart, J.C. Penney, CVS, Boscov’s, and Meijer. Scent Beauty plans to increase its marketing investment to approximately $10 million next year, with a goal to double Stetson's fragrance business within five years. The company projects that Untamed will generate $10 million in retail sales this year and $20 million in 2027. This launch represents the biggest in Stetson's history in the last 40 years, according to Steve Mormoris, founder and CEO of Scent Beauty.
Why It's Important?
This ambitious launch by Scent Beauty signifies a strategic shift in the fragrance market, particularly in targeting the Gen Z demographic. By investing heavily in marketing and expanding distribution to mass-market retailers, Scent Beauty is attempting to capture a younger consumer base that is increasingly influential in purchasing decisions. The focus on 'nostalgia and Americana' with the Stetson brand aims to resonate with Gen Z's interest in authentic and heritage-rich products. The collection's pricing strategy, offering both premium eaux de parfum and more accessible body sprays, caters to the diverse spending habits of young consumers who are willing to build a 'scent wardrobe' rather than commit to a single high-priced fragrance. This approach could disrupt traditional fragrance marketing, which often focuses on single hero products. The expansion into major U.S. retailers like Walmart and CVS also highlights the growing importance of mass-market channels for beauty products, as Gen Z consumers are increasingly educated about fragrances through platforms like TikTok, regardless of the price point or retail environment.
What's Next?
The Stetson Untamed collection will roll out to over 5,000 doors nationwide starting September 1. Scent Beauty plans to significantly increase its marketing investment to $10 million next year, indicating a sustained effort to establish the collection in the market. The campaign, fronted by model and actor Matthew Noszka, will utilize paid and earned media, sampling, events, and retail promotions, including a Times Square billboard and a hero video. Scent Beauty also intends to introduce additional Untamed fragrances in the future. Beyond the U.S., the company plans an international push for the new Stetson fragrance concept, with distribution slated for Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Brazil, and other select markets. International sales are expected to eventually account for approximately 20% of Untamed's U.S. volume. The success of this launch will likely influence future strategies for other heritage brands looking to appeal to younger consumers.
Beyond the Headlines
This launch reflects a broader cultural trend of renewed interest in Americana and nostalgia, particularly among younger generations. The deliberate masculine branding of the Untamed campaign, which emphasizes wellness, introspection, and sensitivity alongside ruggedness, suggests an evolving definition of masculinity in contemporary society. The strategy of offering a 'scent wardrobe' rather than a single signature fragrance for Gen Z consumers highlights a shift in consumer behavior, where individuals seek variety and options across different price points and formats. This trend is supported by data indicating that Gen Z consumers spend more on fragrances annually and are influenced by social media platforms like TikTok for product education. The design of the Untamed bottles, featuring sculptural horse-head caps, also taps into the Gen Z preference for aesthetically pleasing packaging that can be displayed, turning products into lifestyle statements. This move by Scent Beauty could set a precedent for how traditional brands adapt to modern consumer preferences and digital influence.
