A new roadmap developed by consultancies ERM and Systemiq, in collaboration with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Fertilizer Association, outlines a credible path for the global potash and phosphate fertilizer
industry to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The roadmap aims to achieve deep decarbonization by 2050, aligning with the Paris Agreement goals, while simultaneously ensuring global food security and supply stability. Without intervention, sector emissions are projected to increase by approximately 25% from the 2024 baseline, reaching an estimated 550 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year by 2050. The strategy involves both incremental measures, such as updating infrastructure with energy recovery systems, and transformational shifts, including reducing reliance on traditional sulfur supplies and exploring alternative chemical pathways. The total global investment required to achieve net-zero production emissions is estimated to be between $235 billion and $320 billion.
