What's Happening?
American Express is implementing a significant change to its charge card accounts, making the 'Pay Over Time' feature mandatory for eligible cards starting February 1, 2027. Historically, Amex offered two primary card types: charge cards, which required
full balance payment monthly, and credit cards, which allowed balances to be carried with interest. The 'Pay Over Time' option was introduced years ago, enabling charge card holders to carry a balance, effectively making them more similar to credit cards. This feature was previously optional, and some cardholders were incentivized with rewards, such as 10,000 Membership Rewards points, for opting in. Amex has begun notifying cardholders that this feature will be automatically activated on cards with no preset spending limit. While cardholders will still have the option to pay their balance in full each month to avoid interest, the 'Pay Over Time' functionality will be a default setting, introducing a minimum payment due option.
Why It's Important?
This change by American Express carries substantial implications for cardholders and the broader credit card market. For consumers, it means a shift in how they manage their charge card balances. While the option to pay in full remains, the automatic activation of 'Pay Over Time' could lead some cardholders to inadvertently carry balances and incur interest charges, especially those accustomed to the traditional charge card model of full monthly payment. This could increase revenue for American Express through interest accrual. The discontinuation of rewards for opting into 'Pay Over Time' also removes an incentive that previously encouraged adoption. This move blurs the lines further between traditional charge cards and credit cards, potentially simplifying Amex's product offerings but also requiring cardholders to be more vigilant about their payment strategies to avoid interest.
What's Next?
As of February 1, 2027, all eligible American Express charge cards will have the 'Pay Over Time' feature automatically enabled. Cardholders will need to actively manage their payments to either pay in full and avoid interest or utilize the new minimum payment option, which will incur interest. It remains unclear whether cardholders will have the ability to opt out of the 'Pay Over Time' feature once it is automatically activated, or if it will become a permanent, non-deactivatable component of their card. This change may prompt other financial institutions to re-evaluate their own card product structures and features, potentially leading to broader shifts in how credit and charge cards are offered and managed in the U.S. market. Cardholders should review their statements and Amex communications carefully to understand the full implications for their accounts.
Beyond the Headlines
The mandatory activation of 'Pay Over Time' reflects a broader trend in the financial industry towards offering more flexible payment options, often at the cost of increased interest revenue for issuers. This move could be seen as a strategic effort by American Express to capture a larger share of the revolving credit market, traditionally dominated by credit cards. It also highlights the evolving nature of financial products, where the distinctions between different types of cards are becoming less clear. Ethically, this change places a greater onus on consumers to understand their payment options and manage their finances diligently to avoid accumulating debt. It could also lead to increased financial literacy efforts from consumer advocacy groups, emphasizing the importance of paying credit card balances in full to avoid interest charges, even when a 'Pay Over Time' option is readily available.
