What's Happening?
Designer Kris Brock has launched a new namesake label, 'Brock,' aiming to create an accessible, design-driven luxury brand for everyday wear. The collection features pieces mostly priced below $1,000, a departure from the higher price points of his previous
venture, Brock Collection. The new line incorporates a romantic aesthetic, which Brock describes as inherent to his design DNA, alongside utilitarian and workwear-inspired elements. Key items include denim jeans inspired by vintage Levi's, a pale pink cinched-waist field jacket, tiered-ruffled frocks, and voluminous layerables. Brock, who is based in Los Angeles, plans to release three collections annually. The collection will launch exclusively on Moda Operandi and through Brock’s own e-commerce site in November. This new endeavor follows Brock's step away from fashion after presenting Brock Collection’s last ready-to-wear collection in March 2021, during which time he focused on creative projects through his consultancy studio. A collaboration with LA fashion label V. Chapman earlier this year reignited his interest in designing clothes.
Why It's Important?
The launch of Kris Brock's new label signifies a strategic shift in the luxury fashion market towards greater accessibility without compromising design integrity. By offering pieces predominantly under $1,000, Brock is tapping into a growing consumer demand for high-quality, designer items that are more attainable for a broader audience. This move could influence other luxury brands to re-evaluate their pricing strategies and consider more inclusive market segments. The emphasis on 'everyday wear' also reflects a broader trend in fashion where comfort and practicality are increasingly valued alongside aesthetics, especially in a post-pandemic landscape. For consumers, this means more options for designer clothing that can be integrated into daily life rather than reserved for special occasions. The brand's exclusive launch on Moda Operandi and its own e-commerce site highlights the continued importance of online retail channels for new fashion ventures, allowing for direct engagement with consumers and a streamlined distribution model.
What's Next?
The 'Brock' label is set to launch exclusively on Moda Operandi and through the brand's e-commerce site in November. Following this initial launch, Kris Brock plans to release three collections per year, indicating a consistent and active presence in the fashion calendar. While currently focused on California, Brock has expressed interest in potentially holding a runway show in Paris in the future, which could elevate the brand's international profile and reach. The success of this new accessible luxury model will likely be closely watched by industry peers, potentially influencing future strategies for both emerging and established designers. Consumer reception to the initial collection, particularly regarding the balance between luxury design and accessible pricing, will be a key indicator of the brand's trajectory and its potential to carve out a significant niche in the competitive fashion market.
Beyond the Headlines
Kris Brock's transition from the acclaimed Brock Collection to his new namesake label, 'Brock,' reflects a deeper evolution within the fashion industry, moving away from the ultra-exclusive, high-priced luxury model towards a more democratic approach. The original Brock Collection, a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner, was known for its presence in high-end retailers, many of which have since faced closures or significant changes. This shift underscores the challenges faced by traditional luxury retail and the need for designers to adapt to changing market dynamics and consumer behaviors. Brock's decision to focus on 'designer' pieces that are 'easier to say yes to' speaks to a broader cultural shift where consumers are increasingly seeking value and versatility in their purchases. The deliberate revelation of garment underpinnings like boned corsets and lace insertions, once hidden, now incorporated into everyday wear, also signifies a playful deconstruction of traditional fashion norms, blending intimacy with public presentation and challenging conventional notions of 'precious' clothing.
