What's Happening?
Lafayette College has announced the appointment of Courtney Svetik as its new Director of Athletic Communications. Svetik, who previously served as the athletic communications fan engagement director since 2023, was promoted to the position on September
3 after a month-long search. She takes over from Phil LaBella, who held the role for eight years and has since been promoted to executive director for strategic communications at the college. Svetik's responsibilities will include overseeing the department's social media presence, developing graphics, and managing jumbotron content and in-game promotions for home basketball and football games. Her selection was made by a search committee comprising LaBella, athletic director Sherryta Freeman, head men’s lacrosse coach Patrick Myers, and Director of Digital Strategy Erwin Annulysse. Svetik expressed her enthusiasm for the role, highlighting her creative approach and the potential for fresh and innovative work within the department.
Why It's Important?
This appointment signifies a strategic shift in how Lafayette College's athletic department plans to engage with its audience and promote its teams. Svetik's focus on strengthening the digital presence of each team, particularly through increased social media content, is crucial in today's landscape for recruiting efforts and fan engagement. By moving more printed materials to GoLeopards.com, the college is aligning with modern digital trends, which can lead to broader accessibility and potentially reduce operational costs. This move also reflects a broader trend in collegiate athletics where digital communication and social media play an increasingly vital role in brand building and connecting with prospective student-athletes and the wider community. The transition also ensures continuity, as LaBella will continue to work closely with the athletic administration, providing support and input to Svetik in her new role.
What's Next?
Courtney Svetik is expected to implement her vision for strengthening the digital presence of Lafayette College's athletic teams. This will likely involve an immediate focus on enhancing social media content and transitioning more traditional printed materials to the GoLeopards.com website. Her leadership will aim to boost recruiting efforts and improve overall fan engagement through innovative communication strategies. The collaboration between Svetik and Phil LaBella, who will provide ongoing support, suggests a smooth transition and a continued emphasis on effective communication within the athletic department. The college community can anticipate a more dynamic and digitally-focused approach to athletic communications in the coming months, with potential impacts on how the teams are perceived and how effectively they can attract new talent.
Beyond the Headlines
The appointment of Courtney Svetik underscores a significant evolution in the field of athletic communications, moving beyond traditional press releases to embrace a more comprehensive digital strategy. Her background in video production and social media management reflects the growing demand for professionals who can leverage diverse platforms to tell compelling stories and engage with a broader audience. This shift is not unique to Lafayette College but is indicative of a wider trend across collegiate sports, where institutions are recognizing the power of digital media in shaping public perception, fostering community, and attracting top talent. The emphasis on creative content and digital engagement also highlights the changing skill sets required in modern communications roles, prioritizing innovation and adaptability in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
