What's Happening?
FiberSense AG, a company specializing in optical biomarker sensing, has announced that its Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System has received CE marking under Regulation (EU) 2017/745 as a Class IIb medical device. This certification allows the system
to be used for continuous monitoring of blood sugar levels and glucose trends in adults with diabetes. The system utilizes advanced optical sensing technology to measure glucose concentrations in the tissue fluid beneath the skin. Designed for extended use, the system's optical sensor and overtape can be worn for up to 28 days before needing replacement, while the detector and charger are reusable. With this regulatory milestone, FiberSense is now focusing on scaling up manufacturing and preparing for commercialization, with initial orders confirmed and first deliveries expected by late 2026.
Why It's Important?
The CE marking of FiberSense's CGM System is a significant step in the medical technology field, particularly for diabetes management. Continuous glucose monitoring is crucial for individuals with diabetes, offering real-time insights into glucose levels and trends, which can lead to better disease management and improved health outcomes. The system's long-wear capability and reduced need for replacements could lower costs and increase convenience for users. Additionally, this development marks the first regulated application of FiberSense's broader continuous multi-analyte (CxM) platform, which aims to expand into other biomarker sensing applications such as ketones, lactate, and cortisol. This could potentially revolutionize how various health conditions are monitored and managed, offering a more comprehensive approach to health monitoring.
What's Next?
Following the CE marking, FiberSense is advancing towards commercial readiness, focusing on manufacturing ramp-up, logistics, customer support, and market access activities. The company is preparing for the initial market launch, with first deliveries anticipated by the end of 2026. FiberSense is also continuing to develop its CxM platform, exploring additional opportunities in continuous biomarker sensing beyond glucose. Future applications could include monitoring other analytes, provided they meet scientific, clinical, and regulatory requirements. This expansion could lead to a broader adoption of continuous monitoring technologies in healthcare, potentially improving patient outcomes across various conditions.
