What's Happening?
Eurosport and TNT Sports, along with HBO Max, have secured a long-term extension of their broadcast rights to show every event on the IBU World Cup and World Championship calendar for at least the next four seasons. This agreement, effective from the 2026/2027
season, covers all European markets, excluding the Nordics, Poland, and Russia, with additional exclusivity for the entire World Cup season in 34 territories. Live television coverage will be available on Eurosport and TNT Sports (in the UK and Ireland), encompassing every World Cup event and World Championships, including the next three editions in Otepää (Estonia, 2027), Hochfilzen (Austria, 2028), and Oslo (Norway, 2029), leading up to the Olympic Winter Games French Alpes 2030. HBO Max will serve as the streaming home for biathlon across Europe, offering live and on-demand access with innovative in-app features.
Why It's Important?
This long-term extension solidifies Eurosport and TNT Sports' position as the primary broadcasters for biathlon in Europe, ensuring consistent and comprehensive coverage for fans across the continent. For biathlon enthusiasts, this means continued access to all major events, including the World Cup and World Championships, through established television channels and the growing HBO Max streaming platform. The exclusivity in numerous territories enhances the value of these platforms for winter sports fans. This deal also supports the growth and stability of biathlon as a sport by providing a reliable broadcast partner, which is crucial for attracting sponsorships and maintaining public interest. The integration of HBO Max with innovative in-app features aims to deepen fan engagement, catering to modern viewing habits and potentially expanding the sport's audience. This commitment underscores the significant role of winter sports in Eurosport and TNT Sports' programming portfolio.
What's Next?
The extended coverage will begin with the 2026/2027 season, featuring key dates such as the World Cup events in Kontiolahti, Hochfilzen, and Annecy-Le Grand-Bornand in late 2026, and the IBU World Championships in Otepää, Estonia, in February 2027. HBO Max will offer live and on-demand content, including in-app innovations designed to highlight key moments. Extensive editorial coverage, interviews, short competition highlights, and other digital content will also be made available on localized web, app, and social platforms. This comprehensive approach aims to cater to diverse fan preferences and ensure maximum accessibility to biathlon content. The agreement also aligns with the International Biathlon Union's confirmation of venues and sporting programs through 2029-2030, providing a clear roadmap for the sport's future.
Beyond the Headlines
The continued investment in niche sports like biathlon by major broadcasters like Eurosport and TNT Sports highlights the strategic importance of diverse content portfolios in the competitive media landscape. While football and basketball often dominate sports headlines, winter sports maintain a dedicated and growing audience, particularly in Europe. The success of biathlon, as evidenced by its high viewership during the 2025-2026 World Cup season and its strong performance during the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, demonstrates its commercial viability. The use of streaming platforms like HBO Max with interactive features is a key strategy to engage younger demographics and provide a more personalized viewing experience, reflecting the evolving consumption habits of sports fans. This long-term commitment not only benefits the broadcasters but also provides crucial stability and exposure for the sport itself.
