What's Happening?
Delhi Fashion Week's International Reinvent Northeast Season 9 showcased Indian fashion and Northeast India's cultural heritage at the 31st Admiralty Needle International Fashion, Art and Design Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia, from October 19 to 23,
2026. Harshit Dhingaun, Chairman of Delhi Fashion Club and Director of VOY Media & Events, led the initiative to provide international exposure for the region's traditional textiles, cultural attire, and indigenous craftsmanship. A key highlight was 'THREADS OF MANIPUR – A LEGACY OF HERITAGE & ELEGANCE,' a collection by Lairenlakpam Lily Chanu of Shiroi Lily Closet, inspired by Manipur's cultural identity and traditional textiles. The presentation also featured traditional Rongmei Naga attire and an international masterclass on Meghalaya's indigenous Ryndia silk at Saint Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design. Additionally, Kamari, a sustainable fashion brand from Delhi, presented a contemporary Indian design perspective.
Why It's Important?
This international showcase is important for several reasons. It provides a significant platform for Indian designers and traditional textile artisans, particularly from Northeast India, to gain global recognition and market access. By presenting these unique cultural heritages on an international stage, the initiative helps preserve and promote indigenous craftsmanship that might otherwise be overlooked in the fast-paced global fashion industry. This exposure can lead to increased demand for these textiles, creating economic opportunities and sustainable livelihoods for local communities in Northeast India. Furthermore, it fosters cultural exchange, allowing international audiences to appreciate the diversity and richness of Indian traditions. The inclusion of a sustainable fashion brand like Kamari also highlights India's commitment to contemporary design practices while respecting its heritage, positioning the country as a multifaceted player in the global fashion landscape.
What's Next?
The Delhi Fashion Club and VOY Media & Events aim to continue building international opportunities for Northeast Indian textiles and cultural expressions. The success of this event in St. Petersburg is expected to pave the way for similar showcases on other global fashion platforms. Efforts will likely focus on connecting Northeast Indian designers with international buyers and collaborators, further integrating their unique products into the global market. The educational masterclass on Ryndia silk suggests a potential for future academic and industry partnerships to explore sustainable textile innovations. Continued promotion of traditional craftsmanship and cultural attire will be a priority, ensuring that these rich heritages gain sustained international appreciation and support. The initiative will also likely seek to expand its reach to other regions within India, bringing more diverse textile traditions to the forefront.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate commercial and cultural benefits, this initiative has deeper implications for cultural diplomacy and the global perception of India. By showcasing the intricate artistry and historical significance of Northeast Indian textiles, it challenges monolithic views of Indian culture and highlights its vast diversity. This can foster greater understanding and appreciation of India's rich heritage on a global scale. The emphasis on traditional craftsmanship in a modern fashion context also speaks to the enduring value of artisanal skills in an increasingly industrialized world. It underscores the importance of cultural preservation as a driver of economic development and identity. Moreover, the collaboration between fashion, art, and design festivals serves as a model for how cultural institutions can work together to create impactful international exchanges, promoting both heritage and contemporary innovation.
