Amazon has announced plans to significantly expand its Prime Air drone delivery service to nearly 500 cities and towns across the United States by the end of the year. This expansion includes major metropolitan areas such as Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland,
and Boise. The service aims to deliver lightweight packages, up to 5 pounds, to customers in as little as 30 minutes. This move represents a more than sixfold increase in Amazon's drone delivery operations nationwide. The drones will primarily operate in suburban areas, avoiding potential issues with skyscrapers and major airports. While hundreds of thousands of packages have already been delivered by Amazon drones this year, this expansion is expected to increase that number, though drones will still handle a fraction of the company's total deliveries. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated in his annual letter that the company has learned a great deal from flying drones in 11 existing sites across various states and aims to serve 30 million customers by year-end, with a goal of delivering half a billion packages by the end of the decade.
