What's Happening?
The Oswego Village Board is set to vote on economic incentive and loan agreements aimed at facilitating the establishment of a new restaurant in downtown Oswego. The proposed restaurant, Ellwood Steak and Fish House, is planned for a vacant space at 180
W. Washington St. within the Reserve at Hudson Crossing development. The developer, 4 Guys Kitchen Oswego LLC, seeks approval for up to $340,000 in direct financial assistance and a $300,000 loan at a 3% interest rate, based on estimated project costs of $1.15 million. The space has been vacant since the building's construction in 2021, and previous plans for a pizza restaurant were abandoned in 2022. The restaurant is expected to generate significant tax revenue, which would help offset the financial impact of the incentive.
Why It's Important?
The approval of financial incentives for the new restaurant could significantly impact the local economy by revitalizing a vacant space and increasing tax revenue. The restaurant is projected to generate between $500,000 and $1 million in sales taxes over a 10-year period, contributing to the village's financial health. Additionally, the establishment of a higher-end dining option could attract more visitors to downtown Oswego, potentially boosting other local businesses. The decision reflects the village's commitment to economic development and its willingness to invest in projects that promise long-term benefits.
What's Next?
If the proposed agreements are approved, construction on the restaurant could begin soon, with the potential for opening before the end of the year. The village plans to rebate 50% of sales taxes generated by the business for up to 10 years or until a maximum of $300,000 is reached. The restaurant's success could lead to further development opportunities in the area, encouraging other businesses to consider Oswego as a viable location. The village's decision will be closely watched by stakeholders interested in the economic growth of the region.
