Pianist Brad Mehldau has released his album 'Ride into the Sun,' which centers on the music of singer-songwriter Elliott Smith. The album features arrangements of 10 of Smith’s songs, alongside four Mehldau originals and tracks by Nick Drake and Big Star.
Mehldau, known for his eclectic tastes, has reinterpreted these songs with luxuriant harmonies, some arranged for a hand-picked band including drummer Matt Chamberlain and mandolinist Chris Thile, and others with a chamber orchestra. The project stems from Mehldau's personal experience emerging from a significant depressive episode, during which he found solace and healing in Smith's music. Mehldau met Smith in the mid-1990s in Los Angeles and was immediately moved by his songwriting. He will be touring the album, including a stop in Boston on September 2 at the Groton Hill Music Center, where he will perform with the Boston chamber orchestra A Far Cry.
