What's Happening?
85 Watches, a spin-off of Make Good Watches founded by Leonard in Singapore, has launched the GHOST, a transparent digital watch. The GHOST emerged from years of modifying off-the-shelf digital watches, particularly the Casio F-91W. The watch features
a fully transparent polycarbonate case and resin strap, dual-time functionality, and essential digital features like a stopwatch, countdown timer, and alarm. A notable aspect is its custom-made module, developed specifically for the GHOST to offer desired features rather than using an existing off-the-shelf component. The watch also includes an EL Brite backlight for visibility in the dark. The name 'GHOST' was inspired by a line from a Netflix show, reflecting the transparent design.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of the 85 Watches GHOST signifies a trend in the watch industry towards innovative design and customization, even within the digital watch segment. By developing a custom module, 85 Watches demonstrates a commitment to unique functionality and user experience, moving beyond simple aesthetic modifications. This approach can appeal to consumers seeking distinctive timepieces that blend classic digital watch aesthetics with modern design elements. The transparent case offers a fresh visual appeal, allowing wearers to appreciate the internal workings and creating a conversation piece. This product highlights how smaller brands can carve out a niche by focusing on thoughtful design and bespoke engineering, challenging the dominance of larger manufacturers with mass-produced models.
What's Next?
The 85 Watches GHOST is positioned as a versatile everyday watch suitable for various activities, from work to travel and gym use. Its lightweight and unobtrusive design, combined with practical features like dual-time functionality, aims to make it a 'grab and go' model. The brand's focus on a unique design and custom module suggests a potential for future innovations in digital watch technology and aesthetics. The GHOST's reception in the market will likely influence 85 Watches' subsequent product development, potentially leading to more models that blend familiar digital watch elements with novel design and engineering. The watch is currently priced at $39.90 USD.
Beyond the Headlines
The GHOST's origin story, rooted in years of modifying existing watches and a serendipitous name inspiration from a Netflix show, speaks to the passion and creativity often found in independent watchmaking. This narrative adds a layer of authenticity and charm that mass-produced watches often lack. The transparent design, while visually striking, also subtly challenges conventional notions of watch aesthetics, inviting wearers to embrace a more playful and less traditional approach to timekeeping. The watch's small size and light weight, which some might perceive as toy-like, also highlight a shift towards comfort and minimalism in personal accessories, contrasting with the trend of larger, more substantial timepieces. This blend of personal history, innovative design, and practical utility positions the GHOST as more than just a gadget, but a reflection of evolving consumer tastes.
