What's Happening?
Standard Nuclear has completed the construction of two new manufacturing plants in Tennessee and Idaho, aimed at increasing domestic production of tri-structural isotropic (TRISO) nuclear fuel. These facilities are designed to produce up to 5 metric tons
of uranium annually once fully operational. The plants utilize a standardized architecture to streamline production and reduce costs. TRISO fuel, which features a High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) core, is intended for next-generation nuclear reactors, offering enhanced safety and efficiency.

The development of TRISO fuel production facilities represents a significant step in advancing nuclear energy technology in the U.S. TRISO fuel's robust design allows for high-temperature operation and improved safety, making it suitable for advanced reactors and microreactors. This expansion supports the U.S. Department of Energy's goals to enhance energy security and reduce reliance on foreign nuclear fuel sources. What's Next?
Standard Nuclear will conduct system integration testing and finalize regulatory steps to commence full-scale production. The company plans to expand its production capabilities further through a joint venture in Washington state. As the facilities become operational, they will supply TRISO fuel to various commercial reactor designs and defense platforms, supporting the broader adoption of advanced nuclear technologies.
