What's Happening?
Cap Henneman, a 2025 journalism graduate from Elon University, has rapidly established a career in collegiate athletics video production, currently serving as the assistant director of creative content for the University of Pittsburgh's football program.
Henneman's journey began with extensive experience during his time at Elon, working with Rising Phoenix and Elon Athletics video production, and interning with The Burlington School's prep basketball program. After graduating, he further honed his skills with the Cape Cod Baseball League. He initially joined Pitt Athletics in January as an assistant director of video production, creating content across various sports. After six months, he transitioned to a role specifically supporting Pitt football but negotiated a hybrid position to remain the secondary video contact for Pitt men’s basketball, demonstrating his commitment to his 'basketball roots.' His responsibilities include producing short-form content from daily practices, longer-form 'mic'd-up' features, and editing significant productions like the 'Field Pass' video series for Pitt football.
Why It's Important?
Henneman's rapid career progression highlights the growing demand for skilled multimedia content creators within collegiate athletics. His ability to secure a hybrid role, balancing responsibilities between football and men's basketball, underscores the value placed on versatile content producers who can cater to multiple programs. This trend reflects the increasing importance of digital storytelling and social media engagement for athletic departments, which use such content to connect with fans, recruit athletes, and promote their brands. The demanding schedule and high-level exposure Henneman experiences at a Division I institution like the University of Pittsburgh provide a real-world example of the intense environment and significant opportunities available in this specialized field. His success also showcases the practical application of a journalism degree in a dynamic, sports-focused setting, emphasizing the need for hands-on experience and a diverse portfolio for aspiring professionals.
What's Next?
As the collegiate athletics landscape continues to evolve, particularly with the emphasis on Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) initiatives, professionals like Henneman will likely play an even more crucial role. His involvement in leading the rollout of new NIL initiatives for Pitt Athletics suggests a future where content creators are integral to athlete branding and promotional efforts. Henneman plans to continue improving within the creative team as the season progresses, indicating a focus on refining his skills and contributing to the ongoing success of Pitt's athletic programs. The demand for compelling visual narratives in sports is expected to grow, driven by fan engagement, recruitment, and the competitive nature of collegiate sports marketing. His experience in creating storytelling-driven pieces, such as the '2026 Pitt Football Season Trailer,' positions him to take on more significant creative projects in the future, potentially influencing how collegiate athletic programs communicate their stories to a broader audience.
Beyond the Headlines
Henneman's journey reflects a broader shift in how sports organizations, particularly at the collegiate level, engage with their audiences. The traditional role of sports media has expanded significantly, with athletic departments now acting as their own content powerhouses. This trend has implications for journalism and communications education, emphasizing the need for programs to equip students with practical video production, editing, and digital storytelling skills. Furthermore, the 'practically living in the facility' aspect of his work highlights the intense dedication and long hours often required in high-level collegiate sports, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle of professionals in this field. His ability to negotiate a hybrid role also speaks to the increasing specialization within sports media, where individuals can carve out niches based on their passions and expertise, such as basketball, even while primarily working for another sport like football. This adaptability and passion are key drivers in navigating the competitive landscape of sports content creation.
