Arran Strong, a 28-year-old British surfer, has been presumed dead after going missing off the southern coast of Portugal. Strong, who had been living with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, was last seen paddleboarding with his coach, José Maria Pyrrait,
on July 27. The pair were attempting a sea crossing when Strong disappeared near Arrifana Beach. Despite an extensive search by Portuguese maritime authorities, no trace of Strong was found, leading to the search being called off. Strong was a top-ranked British male surfer, having competed in the 2024 and 2025 ISA World Surfing Games.
