Runners are increasingly focusing on functional core strength, moving beyond traditional abdominal exercises to incorporate movements that enhance stability and prevent injuries. According to personal trainer and strength coach Lauren Pak, cofounder of Theory
of Motion, the core for runners encompasses not just the abs but also the obliques, spinal erectors, transverse abdominis, diaphragm, pelvic floor muscles, glutes, and hip flexors. These muscles collectively support and stabilize the spine, facilitating essential movement patterns like rotation, flexion, extension, and lateral flexion, while also resisting excessive movement. Pak emphasizes training movement patterns rather than isolated muscles, advocating for a holistic approach that includes exercises designed to produce and resist these movements.
