A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine indicates that the pace of walking may be as crucial as the number of steps taken for reducing the risk of early death. The research, which analyzed movement data from over 100,000 middle-aged
adults in the UK Biobank, found that taking fewer steps at a faster pace could offer similar health benefits to taking more steps at a slower pace. The study categorized daily step counts and calculated participants' 'peak-30 cadence' (their fastest sustained stepping rate during their most active 30 minutes). It followed participants for approximately eight years, tracking deaths from all causes and cardiovascular disease. The findings suggest that for sedentary adults, walking at a brisk pace for 30 minutes daily could significantly lower the risk of early death.
