Researchers at UC San Diego, in collaboration with Google Research, have developed an innovative approach to repurpose old Google Pixel smartphones into a mini cloud computing platform. By removing unnecessary components and replacing the Android operating
system with Linux, the researchers created clusters of 25 to 50 devices. This setup allowed the smartphones to perform comparably to professional server racks, such as the Asus RS720A, in benchmark tests. The initiative aims to provide a cost-effective solution for academic institutions, with UC San Diego planning to implement the system in the fall 2026 semester. The project highlights the potential for using discarded consumer electronics in educational settings, offering a fraction of the cost of traditional server computing power.
